Art: A Palette for Living - Gallery On Glassell

September Happenings
A Taste of Italy, Sun., Sept 12, 2-5 p.m.
Art of Day of the Dead, Sat., Sept. 25, 6-9 p.m.

September is a month of transitions and complements. The days get shorter. Summer usually grips us one last time before the cool nights and mornings of fall arrive. Trees in the higher mountains start turning yellow and red. Pumpkins and squash turn orange against the deep blue autumn sky.

The Gallery On Glassell also has some changes in store this fall. We will introduce gourmet pastas, sauces and condiments during A Taste of Italy, Sun., Sept. 12, 2-5 p.m. And, look for new epicurean delights from France at the end of September.

Collectors will enjoy the new jewelry and folk art arriving for our Art of Day of the Dead celebration, Sat., Sept. 25, 6-9 p.m. You can select anything from matchbox-sized shadow boxes to a four-foot tall Catrina for your DOD shrine.

Because it occurs shortly after Halloween, the Day of the Dead is sometimes thought to be a similar holiday. The two actually have little in common. The Day of the Dead is a time of celebration, where partying is common. The holiday actually recognizes the lives of loved ones who have passed on. Day of the Dead occurs Nov. 2, in connection with the Catholic holidays, All Saints’ Day, Nov. 1, and All Souls’ Day, Nov. 2.

Remember the deceased on Day of the Dead by creating private altars honoring them. Decorate them with sugar skulls, marigolds and servings of their favorite foods and beverages. Visit their graves and leave items as gifts. Or, honor them all year long by starting or adding to your own Day of the Dead shrine.

Celebrate life. Celebrate change.
